Resturant review: Ye Olde Saracens Head

My boyfriends family were stopping off on their trip up to the Lake District. The plan was to go to somewhere close to where he works so that he could meet us there straight after work, so this pub in Balsall Heath was chosen. I checked out their website before visiting and found they had a proper pizza oven, which always gives a restaurant a few brownie points in my opinion!

Upon arriving the waitress showed us to our table, and the place was like a winding maze of room after room. At one point I started to worry how I was ever going to find my way back out later! The building was old but the decor felt a somehow a cross between old and modern (our food was served on those old fashioned metal enamel plates, which now seem to be a fashionable thing). There was also a very large outdoor area and even a section was undercover so you would be slightly sheltered from the rain-which is something you definitely need in the UK.

Food that was ordered was: burgers (I had a naked burger), mussels, fish and chips and a kids pizza and dough balls. The food arrived and it was very rustic looking. My burger came with patty, bacon, cheese, salad and a tomato relish, and was served with skin on fries. I was very surprised to find a small pot of yellow sauce on my plate, which turned out to be homemade mayonnaise and was so delicious I will never look at shop bought mayonnaise the same way ever again. The chunky chips with the battered fish were the largest I have ever seen and tasted similar to roast potatoes.

The pub was fairly quiet when we were there, but we did eat quite early and a few people were sat outside enjoying the (rare) warmth and sunshine.

Good points:

  • The food was really good and all looked like it had been homemade including the burgers, chips and sauces
  • The mayonnaise was out of this world
  • The customer service was great, our waitress was very enthusiastic
  • Great outdoor area

Things to consider:

  • You may get lost inside and have to ask for directions!
